RILUTTANZA, una poesia di Robert Frost nella traduzione di Franco De Poli per Guanda, 1961. L’ultima strofa è la mia epigrafe.
Fuori, tra i campi ed i boschi,
al di là delle mura ho camminato;
ho salito i colli della bella vista,
ho guardato il mondo, e sono ridisceso;
per la via maestra sono tornato a casa.
Ed ecco, tutto è finito.
Le foglie sono tutte morte al suolo
tranne quelle che la quercia tiene strette
per lasciarle cadere ad una ad una
e abbandonarle, stridule e striscianti,
sopra la dura crosta della neve,
quando le altre, ormai, stanno dormendo.
Le foglie morte giacciono ammucchiate
non piú qua e là soffiate dal vento;
l’ultimo fiore solitario è andato,
ed anche le amamelidi appassiscono;
il cuore ancora è in ansia, cerca qualcosa,
ma i piedi chiedono: “Dove?”
Ah, quando al cuore dell’uomo
fu mai meno che un tradimento
lasciarsi trasportare dalle cose,
arrendersi con grazia alla ragione,
e piegarsi, e accettare la fine
di un amore o di una stagione?
RELUCTANCE
Out through the fields and the woods
